The Truth About “Perfect Timing” in Legal Recruiting

I hear this all the time:

“I think I might wait a few months… the timing doesn’t feel right.”

And sometimes that’s valid.

But a lot of the time?

“Perfect timing” doesn’t really exist.

What I See on the Recruiting Side

Opportunities don’t open and close on a perfect, predictable schedule.

They’re driven by:

  • Sudden departures

  • Practice group needs

  • Budget shifts

  • Client demand

Which means the “right” opportunity can show up when you’re not expecting it.

And be gone just as quickly.

The Risk of Waiting

When you wait for everything to line up perfectly:

  • The right role might already be filled

  • You might miss a window you didn’t realize was open

  • You may end up reacting later instead of choosing proactively

A Better Approach

You don’t need to be actively applying to everything.

But staying open is different than staying inactive.

That can look like:

  • Taking conversations when they come up

  • Staying aware of the market

  • Being willing to explore—even if you’re not 100% ready

The Candidates Who Benefit Most

The people who make the strongest moves are usually the ones who:

  • Didn’t force timing

  • But didn’t ignore opportunity either

They stayed flexible.

And when the right situation appeared, they were ready to evaluate it.

To say yes.
